No, the title is not a typo, “Clientician” is a word coined by my friend and colleague, Dr. Jacqueline Sparks to highlight that client directed, PCOMS clinicians put clients first, privileging their perspectives about goals, change, methods, and alliance.
She posited this word in the original PCOMS manual that first articulated the clinical process of PCOMS (Duncan & Sparks, 2002) to highlight our efforts to use non-medical/non-hierarchical language to describe the therapeutic process.
Bimonthly, we will recognize someone who has taken the Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS) to heart. Folks who go beyond understanding PCOMS as just a routine outcome monitoring system and appreciate what we mean by “Partners for Change” as well as our devotion to client privilege and social justice.
Rachel Pinto and Cardinal Counseling Services

Congratulations to Rachel Pinto, MS, LPC, our first honoree. In a word, Rachel is amazing! Her bio: Rachel Pinto is the owner and clinical director of Cardinal Counseling Services. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Arkansas (Lic. No. P1608112) who holds a Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from John Brown University. In 2020, she was listed among AY Magazine's Best Healthcare Professionals of 2020.
Rachel completed the intensive PCOMS Training of Trainers Conference last year and has been a PCOMS enthusiast ever since. PCOMS and its social justice commitment was an excellent fit for the kind of client privileged services that she envisioned and has implemented.
She has brought Cardinal Counseling Services a long way in a brief time. Cardinal Counseling is a finalist for the Small Business Impact Awards, presented by Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center. In addition, this March, the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) celebrated Women’s History Month, honoring several women who have made a difference.

Here are their excerpts about Cardinal Counseling Services and Rachel Pinto: Cardinal Counseling Services, PLLC is an outpatient psychotherapy clinic located in downtown North Little Rock, Arkansas. Offering individual, couple, family and group therapy, Pinto has utilized a tool in her practice called the Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS) to help Cardinal Counseling Services stand out and better serve its clients. [PCOMS ensures] that the very DNA of the clinic will always do two things -- center the client's voice in therapy and keep us focused on the client's goals,” she explained. “Additionally, the ability we have to market ourselves as an outpatient mental health clinic BY queer people and FOR queer people makes us quite unique here in the good old Bible Belt!”
Pinto told us that being a Certified LGBTBE® has helped to set the counseling clinic apart as an LGBTQ+ focused treatment center, as well as helping marginalized folks in the area to more easily find healthcare that acknowledges and supports their respective identities.
Pinto says that being an LGBT woman entrepreneur means that they are bringing their own chair to the table, having started Cardinal Counseling after many years worked in many other jobs.“Ultimately, I was able to admit that I didn't need anybody else's permission to birth the workplace culture I longed for,” she concluded.
